A centrifuge is a device capable of spinning at high speeds. When its rotating shaft rotates rapidly, the turntable on it can generate centrifugal force due to high-speed rotation. The faster the rotation speed, the greater the centrifugal force, and the lighter substances can be settled to the bottom of the centrifuge tube.

Principle: The centrifuge uses a centrifugal force thousands of times stronger than gravity generated when rotating at a high speed, so that the insoluble solids in the suspension quickly deposit tightly under the centrifuge tube to separate the insoluble solids and the solution. The magnitude of the centrifugal force depends on the rotational speed, the radius of rotation and the mass of the substance.

Purpose: A machine that carries a centrifuge tube and settles the material in the tube by centrifugal force to cause the separation of solid and liquid.

There is a base for carrying centrifuge tubes on the turntable of the centrifuge. This base can be divided into two different types: Fixed and Swing:

  • The fixed base has a relatively stable structure and can withstand the strong centrifugal force generated at high speeds, so a fixed base must be selected for high-speed operation. However, because the orientation of the centrifuge tube is fixed, the settled solid will settle down in a diffused shape along the tube wall.
  • The Swing base should be used at a lower rotational speed, but because it can change the inclination of the centrifuge tube with the speed of the rotational speed, the sedimentation force generated by centrifugal force and gravity always points to the bottom of the tube , and finally all the sediment will be concentrated at the bottom of the tube, easy to separate.
